Mountains of paperwork

The Senate on Tuesday passed a sweeping overhaul of the nation’s food-safety system... small-farm and organic food advocates warned that the legislation would destroy their industry under a mountain of paperwork... (add that to the 1099 fiasco, and crushing regulations in CA, and you're toast.)

If you think about it

the US is like a lottery winner who squanders his riches and ends up penniless. A bit of due diligence and he could have been set for life, had plenty of money to do the things he wanted to do, plenty left over to support charities and help where needed.

We are proving ourselves profligate spenders of our inherited wealth. Freedom of religion. Government by the people.

We've decided we don't care about religion. And so those who do care about theirs to the point that they will murder you for simply not being one of them, who adhere to the tenets of their religion so fanatically that they will kill their own wives and daughters will prevail where we will lose. They care so much that we allow ourselves to be overrun and disrespected, because with our great inheritance has come that weakness that always comes to those who have not had to work for what they have. We don't care enough about our religion. And so we will lose it.

We have decided to despise our own strength, hate and denigrate our military, and our policemen, the opposite end of the pendulum from days when a grateful people celebrated those who defended them from harm. And so we sell off our military secrets, we allow people who abuse our openness and our goodwill to commit acts that will result in our demise - as a force to be reckoned with, as an international power for good and as a nation. we don't care enough to celebrate and protect it.

We appear to be pissing it all away. And we will end up penniless, sleeping in doorways, kicked in derision, and dependent on the tolerance of those who once demanded our tolerance. We will find they have no such compunction towards goodness. To our peril. We have done it to ourselves.

That is what the great citizen uprising is trying to prevent. We see it coming. We know, as lottery winners, that we need to husband that resource, we need invest wisely, set aside for the future - we know it. And yet we are powerless. Or are we?

The FBI and CIA have detected hundreds of such attempts to steal American military technology in the last eight years.

Ford Becomes Another Chinese Casualty
A Chinese born engineer, Xiang Dong Yu who worked for Ford Motor Company for over a decade, pled guilty on November 17th of stealing over $50 million worth of Ford technology and selling it to a Chinese automobile company. The most Yu can get is six years in prison and a fine of $150,000. Many of the technologies Yu stole have military applications....

noforn - Julius and Ethel Rosenberg got the death penalty for less

And the people who were so upset about endangering Valerie Plame seem to have no such angst here, where Wikileaks is endangering hundreds of thousands of people like her, and others who risked their own lives in their various countries to help us... It's a tragedy. It should have been stopped. And the leaker should meet the same fate as the Rosenbergs.

It is somehow IRONIC, though, that it is exposing Obama in ways that no one could have imagined possible. Turns out it isn't his Blackberry that is his Achilles Heel.

Publication of the 250,000 classified diplomatic cables would "place at risk the lives of countless innocent individuals," Harold Koh, the State Department's top lawyer, wrote to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.

Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini called it "the 9/11 of world diplomacy."

He said relations between allies will be destroyed by the revelations.

A copy of Germany's Der Spiegel newspaper accidently printed early in Switzerland - an early leak of the big leak - suggests the private cables contain unflattering descriptions of foreign leaders by US diplomats.

French President Nikola Sarkozy is called "an emperor without clothes," Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is likened to Hitler and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev is termed "pale, hesitant."

Afghani President Hamid Karzai is reportedly described as a "weak" man driven by "paranoia" and "conspiracy theories."

WASHINGTON, Nov 28 (Reuters) - King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia repeatedly exhorted the United States to "cut off the head of the snake" by launching military strikes to destroy Iran's nuclear program, according to leaked U.S. diplomatic cables.

A copy of the cable dated April 20, 2008, was published in the New York Times website on Sunday after being released by the whistleblowing website WikiLeaks. The classified communication between the U.S. Embassy in Riyadh and Washington showed the Saudis feared Shi'ite Iran's rising influence in the region, particularly in neighboring Iraq.

Joe Lieberman:
“Wikileaks’ deliberate disclosure of these diplomatic cables is nothing less than an attack on the national security of the United States, as well as that of dozens of other countries. By disseminating these materials, Wikileaks is putting at risk the lives and the freedom of countless Americans and non-Americans around the world. It is an outrageous, reckless, and despicable action that will undermine the ability of our government and our partners to keep our people safe and to work together to defend our vital interests. Obligatory WikiLeaks Apocalypse Post The Other McCain
Dude. When it turns out Saudi royalty is on the same page with Bill Kristol vis-a-vis the need to bomb Iran, you know Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s regime is in trouble.

More seriously: This WikiLeaks dump is extraordinarily damaging to U.S. foreign policy. It impairs the trust of our allies if their confidential communications with our diplomats are not secure. Even the New York Times — which for 40 years has had an unstated editorial policy of undermining America’s national security at every opportunity — feels the need to defend itself for reporting on these leaks.

So, will Assange leak Russian, or Iranian documents? How about China? And if not, what does that tell us about ourselves and the weakness of our own government and our own commitment to our own security?

And why does Homeland Security shut down torrents sites, but does nothing about this guy? Something wrong with this picture.

the nation’s richest senator puts the arm on cash-strapped party donors

The neverending campaign, not even a break as John Kerry, recently ranked the nation’s richest with $2.7 million in his campaign coffers and an estimated net worth of $239 million — is asking fellow Democrats to open their wallets yet again after they dug deep during a hard-fought election year. His extravaganza at the Boston Symphony — where tickets range from $75 to $4,800 — could be a tough sell as the party’s rank-and-file struggles through another Christmas in a tough economy...

Boston University pol-itical professor Thomas Whalen said the extravagant blowout — meant to celebrate Kerry’s 25 years in the Senate and 45 years of public service — could be a turnoff to struggling Bay Staters.

“The symbolism really works against him, which is typical of Kerry,” Whalen said. “It doesn’t exactly portray him as a man of the people. He could inadvertently tick off a lot of supporters given that a lot of people are going through a tough time.”

On October 5, Obama was addressing Fortune magazine’s “Most Powerful Women” summit in Washington, DC. During the middle of Obama's speech, the presidential seal fell off the podium. Publicly, Obama took the incident as a joke, but WMR has learned from White House insiders that Obama went on a tirade after the incident, accusing White House staffers of purposely not anchoring the seal to the podium. The White House supplies all the podiums and seals at all presidential addresses and the seal is usually well-anchored with four screws affixed to the podium. Obama reportedly "freaked out" and accused White House staffers of engaging in a conspiracy against him. The presidential tirade over such a trivial matter was not lost on senior administration officials who have witnessed Obama's lackadaisical behavior during the consideration of much weightier issues, for example, the war in Afghanistan.
