And you thought twisty light bulbs were bad

Try the Nanny-State's low-flow toilets...
San Francisco's big push for low-flow toilets has turned into a multimillion-dollar plumbing stink.

Skimping on toilet water has resulted in more sludge backing up inside the sewer pipes, said Tyrone Jue, spokesman for the city Public Utilities Commission. That has created a rotten-egg stench near AT&T Park and elsewhere, especially during the dry summer months.

The city has already spent $100 million over the past five years to upgrade its sewer system and sewage plants, in part to combat the odor problem.

Now officials are stocking up on a $14 million, three-year supply of highly concentrated sodium hypochlorite - better known as bleach - to act as an odor eater and to disinfect the city's treated water before it's dumped into the bay.

What Percent of California’s State AND Local Budgets are Employee Compensation?

What Percent of California’s State Budget is Employee Compensation? - unionwatch.org
An influential liberal blogger in Orange County, Chris Prevatt, made the following claim on January 25, 2011 in his post “Busting The Myths About Public Employee Pension Costs,” “For California’s budget, salaries represent 7.5 percent of the total state budget. The costs for healthcare and pension benefits are another 3.7 percent.” If only this were true....

Ted Kennedy, Party Man
Judicial Watch’s release of old FBI files on Ted Kennedy...which the FBI fought on grounds of national security. When the redactions were finally removed, however, it seems clear that the FBI acted to protect Kennedy’s reputation rather than American security...

Among other things, "Waitress Sandwich" Kennedy sent an emissary to Boris Yeltsin: Kennedy’s message was simple. He proposed an unabashed quid pro quo. Kennedy would lend Andropov a hand in dealing with President Reagan. In return, the Soviet leader would lend the Democratic Party a hand in challenging Reagan in the 1984 presidential election. “The only real potential threats to Reagan are problems of war and peace and Soviet-American relations,” the memorandum stated. “These issues, according to the senator, will without a doubt become the most important of the election campaign.”

Fascinating. The level to which the Kennedy's are willing to sell out to maintain power. (Yeah, there's more - the renting of the brothel is icing on the cake)

In "SOLIDARITY"

You know, I am really sick of the left using that word "SOLIDARITY" for their pathetic agendas.

That word evokes Lech Walesa, who represented people who endured real hardship and horrific conditions - not pampered Union thugs who want to keep their ability to order politicians around, and who will act as brownshirted (sorry, purpleshirted) stormtroopers for the government.

It really pisses me off when I hear it applied to Democratic legislators who skip out rather than stay and do their jobs. Stay. Have the debate. Maybe lose. It's the way it works.

The truth is we do not need them in their seats in order to know how they will vote. We can fill in their party-line vote for them.

Keep their checks, close their offices and send their staff home with pink slips. save the taxpayers even more money. Meanwhile, Have a vote? Fill in D each and every time.

New Soros investment fund, profiting off Obama's 'green energy' push, hires top Obama conflict of interest energy aide

New Soros investment fund, profiting off Obama's 'green energy' push, hires top Obama energy aide
Nazi collaborator George Soros -- whom we're always told is not serving his own economic interests at all by promoting liberal politicians and big-government policies -- is launching a new investment fund that plans to profit off of the "green energy" boom, which is entirely dependent on government subsidies supported by the groups Soros funds....

The press release casually mentions whom Soros is hiring to run this new fund: Cathy Zoi... Zoi was Barack Obama's "Acting Under Secretary for Energy and Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy." An Al Gore acolyte, Zoi was Obama's point-woman on subsidizing green tech. Now she's going to work for George Soros to profit off of subsidized green tech.

If you remember Zoi's name, it's because of another green-tech conflict of interest: Zoi's husband is an executive at a window company, Serious Windows, which the White House regularly held up as a "poster child of green industry." Oh yeah, Serious Materials pocketed federal stimulus money, too.

rhetorical pitchforks and light political torches

Democrats just don't understand the new populism - washingtonexaminer
While the liberals can wield rhetorical pitchforks and light political torches, they should realize that it's their guys who are living inside the castle today. Specifically, public-sector unions -- by many measures the most entrenched special interest in American politics -- are not fighting against The Man, which is to say the entrenched powers of government. In this struggle, The Man is the government unions, which are sitting in the smoky back room divvying up the spoils of a crooked racket. And cronyism -- not wealth -- is the object of today's populist ire.
The Left has misread the postbailout populist sentiment all along, assuming public anger was directed at the rich. But American anger, I suspect, is directed not at some people who have money or success, but at those who profit through cronyism and their connections to power.

The acrid Paul Krugman wrote in the New York Times that government unions provide a "counterweight to the political power of big money."

Hard facts utterly contradict Krugman's claim. First, unions are "Big Money." Of the top 10 sources of political contributions since 1989, according to the Center for Responsive Politics, five are unions. Of the top 20 sources of 2010 campaign funds, 10 are unions.

And the notion that Big Labor is cancelling out Big Business -- well, that's a Big Lie, too. The 10 industries that contributed the most during the 2010 elections -- from Wall Street to government unions -- all gave more to Democrats than to Republicans.

The top donor to House and Senate campaigns in the 2010 elections -- the Service Employees International Union -- is otherwise known as "Obama's Union." The company that spent the most on lobbying in 2010 -- General Electric -- is also known as "the for-profit arm of the Obama Administration."

In the retrograde liberal way of thinking, though, populism is about class warfare, in which the wealthy and corporations are the "special interests" arrayed against the poor working man. But in today's Wisconsin skirmish, the "working man" is implausibly the Wisconsin Education Association, the third-largest political donor in the state last election cycle.

Freedom to shop around

The WEA Trust is, in essence, a union-run “multi-employer” health insurance trust (the employers, in this case, are school districts).

The way it works is that WEAC has, through collective bargaining (negotiations), convinced school districts to pay into the WEA Trust and, in turn, the WEA Trust is responsible for administering teachers’ benefits. According to PublicSchoolSpending.com, Walker’s proposal would give school boards the ability to shop freely for more competitive insurance rates and save the state millions.

Now Indiana Dems cut and run - indystar
Seats on one side of the Indiana House were nearly empty today as House Democrats departed the the state rather than vote on anti-union legislation.

A source tells The Indianapolis Star that Democrats are headed to Illinois, though it was possible some also might go to Kentucky. They need to go to a state with a Democratic governor to avoid being taken into police custody and returned to Indiana....

Today’s fight was triggered by Republicans pushing a bill that would bar unions and companies from negotiating a contract that requires non-union members to kick-in fees for representation.
Political Fight Over Unions Escalates - wsj
On Monday, thousands of steelworkers, autoworkers and other labor activists surrounded the Indiana state capitol to protest a bill before the legislature to dramatically weaken the clout of private-sector unions.
Turning up the pressure on the Democrats, Gov. Scott Walker warned that state employees could start receiving layoff notices as early as next week if the bill isn't passed soon. The layoffs couldn't take effect immediately — existing union contracts could forestall them for weeks or months — and Walker wouldn't say which jobs he would go after first.
With their Senate colleagues still in hiding, Democrats in the Wisconsin Assembly began introducing a barrage of 100 amendments Tuesday to try to stymie the Republican governor's plan to strip unionized public employees of most of their bargaining rights.
Both houses of the GOP-controlled Legislature convened shortly before noon amid noisy protests outside the state Capitol that began more than a week ago in an epic showdown that is being watched nervously by organized labor across the country.
The Senate was unable to take up the union measure because its 14 Democrats skipped town last week, denying the chamber a quorum.

...why has our left become so reactionary, so unwilling or unable to adapt to a changed world that they “act out” with all the juvenility of adolescents deprived of the family car keys? Some say it is because they have replaced religious faith with politics and I, an agnostic, see some truth in that. But there is more. Liberalism has become a mask for greed in our culture – a way of hiding excessive selfishness from others and, importantly, from the self. It’s a deflection, really....

Huge numbers are unemployed. But when asked to pull together for the good of the mean, the liberals, the ones who pay the greatest lip service to equality, say NO.

They hide behind “Union! Union! Union!” and “No pasaran!,” but it’s all a fake. When the chips are down, our modern liberals are overcome by their own sense of entitlement. Christopher Lasch’s Culture of Narcissism has infected them to such a degree reality cannot intrude.

Couple shoplifted $5 million from Portland Safeway stores, police say

I know they caught a pair of ahoplifters here some years back - they came in together, each with a cart, and as they went through the store they'd put identical items in each cart. Then she would check out, take the items to the car, and come back in, hand the receipt to him, and if challenged at the door, the items would match those on the receipt...

Must have worked for quite a while, til someone noticed what they were doing, and a surveillance camera proved the lie. Clever, though.

Wisconsin’s public employees will still have benefit plans more generous than most workers across the country. And these steps are being taken with the express purpose of avoiding major layoffs and dramatic paycuts. But the unions don't like it.

The Real Deal in Madison - theothermccain
Democrats, after losing the November election, called a special lame-duck session in an abortive effort to lock in sweetheart deals for government employee unions. When that didn’t work, Democrats have since tried to prevent Republicans from acting to balance the budget
Some Recent Historical Context for Wisconsin-Union Dispute
[UPDATED] - piece of work in progress
A lame-duck special session is a rarity in Wisconsin state politics, having been called only once before in the past 40 years. Those very same Democratic Senators who have fled Wisconsin so as to prevent a voting quorum were part of this scheme, and the idea was to take advantage of the absence of any Republican State Senators who had left on vacation to ram through the new deals with 17 different unions, including language that would effectively eliminate oversight of state regulatory agencies and give them full control of workplace policies without having to get government permission....

Dave Hansen, the outgoing Dem majority leader, made the principled decision that the voters of the state had elected a new slate of legislators to deal with budget matters, and all of the contracts but one (for child-care providers) went down by identical 16-16 votes.

It was widely believed that all of those contracts would be approved in Special Session, but Republican lawmakers showed up to do their jobs. Whether Nancy Pelosi was proud of them or not is not recorded.

...in an effort to avoid contributing to their own pensions and funding 6 percent more of their own health care premiums, teachers have taken unpaid leave to protest and have given up nearly $500 – so far. (They could recoup the money if their districts add school days at the end of the year.) What’s more, Wisconsin teachers pay as much as $1100 each year in compulsory union dues. If the legislation passes, they will no longer be required to pay thosee dues – returning that money to their own pockets....

Isn’t it ironic that the Democratic Senators have fled the democratic process? Huge deficits and debt: Obama’s ultimate redistribution program

Shocking... - Flopping Aces
In 2009 Obama promised to halve the deficit by FY 2013....the lapdog media is portraying Obama as cutting deeply into the budget....He’s not serious about cutting at all. In fact, Obama is doing absolutely everything he can to balloon the deficit and the debt and there is a reason for it.

Obama has added about 141,000 to the Federal Payroll and that’s just the beginning. Obamacare adds 159 new agencies and programs. The list can be seen here. Over one thousand IRS agents and staff will be needed to enforce Obamacare at a cost of $359 million in 2012 alone just to begin implementing Obamacare. It is estimated that overall Obamacare could require at least 17,000 more federal employees. We are going to be made to pay $11 million dollars for 81 workers just to make sure tanning salons pay their new ten percent tax. That averages out to be $135,000 per tanning tax enforcer per year.

Dodd-Frank will add 8 agencies and 5000 people to the Federal Payroll.

The cost of these agencies will very likely double every twenty years. The budget for the Department of Education went from $24 billion in 1990 to $64 billion in 2009.

The number of Federal employees making over $150,000 per year has doubled under Barack Obama. Pay and benefits for federal workers are now double what is seen in the private sector.

Obama has increased welfare spending to historic levels. Welfare spending has increased from $500 billion in 2008 to $750 billion in 2010.... and there's more at the link

Secret of Voynich Manuscript, an Ancient Book Written in 'Alien' Code, Partly Revealed
...Found in a chest of books outside Rome by a dealer in antique books, the Voynich manuscript is among literature's great mysteries. The book of aging parchment is written in alien characters, some resembling Latin letters, others unlike anything used in any known language, and arranged into what appear to be words and sentences -- except they don't resemble anything written or read by human beings. And for decades, the manuscript has mystified scientists. "Is it a code, a cipher of some kind?" asked Greg Hodgins, a physicist with the University of Arizona. "People are doing statistical analysis of letter use and word use -- the tools that have been used for code breaking. But they still haven't figured it out," Hodgins said.

Oprah lost her own respect and following when she, who had presented herself as an advocate for women, chose race over all else.

Take your weakness and try to make it a strength - Look what Nov. 2010 has done - created a "religious" obama, not be confused with chia-pet obama. He is suddenly "devout" - and as usual he can say the words, but the core is never engaged.

For Obama, church is a stepping stone - he chose the abominable Rev. Wright because of the political clout he could deliver and the doors he could open. Once elected he threw religion to the curb, no need for any more pretense.

Reading his words here, it will be interesting to see if any of those who mocked Bush for his faith will call obama on this bullshit. And that is the word for this man and his never-ending cynical rhetoric. It is pure unadulterated bullshit dyed to match the purple kool-aid.

Just wondering if it will fly this time.

Obama invokes religious themes as 2012 campaign nears Next he'll be wearing a flag pin and holding his hand over his heart when they say the flag salute. I wonder just how far he will go.

The Tuscon Tea Party Needs Your Help

Local Authorities Are Trying to Silence These Patriots
We are trying to hold a tea party on April 30th in Tucson. Already the blowback from some in leadership since January 8th has been to try and shut us down.

We were having a town hall/forum on mental health on Feb 18th and one by one the County Prosecutor and Sheriff have spoken to our speakers and intimidated them to the point where they will no longer speak. This really can’t happen....

Do you have any contacts that would be willing to at least consider an invitation to come and speak at our tea party that day?

Another case where it is important to compare and contrast - the way that ANY OTHER protest group gets treated compared to the way these ordinary citizens get treated. The kid gloves applied to Cindy Sheehan, for example, where they threatened a President, and this where NO ONE is threatened, except by mass hysteria.

From the Mailbox - this one is for Eric - On Judicial Unanimity

Recap: In response to this statement, "Unanimous decisions are so rare - The fact that the rulings were unanimous can be seen as a signal from on high that the circuit needs to get in line. Duh. Unanimous. That is RARE these days and any lawyer will tell you that. ANY lawyer." Eric said, "Okay, I was just told by an appellate attorney that actually the majority of Supreme Court decisions are unanimous. Most of their decisions are based on procedural technicalities rather than constitutional arguments and the like which don't generate media attention. She said that of the last 15 cases, 10 were unanimous.

She said that the vast majority of decisions to deny cert are unanimous,"

From the Mailbox: Hate to break this to you Eric, but your friend is wrong. Nice attempt at the spin though. (note: And he/she is right, it is long, so I'll put in a page break - and I'm adding a link to an Althouse discussion at the end...)

Lets look at just one year that I had earlier analyzed. That is 2008. You will see that unanimity is just a tad under 30% of all decisions issued by the court that year. There were 70 decisions of which only 20 were unanimous. I will go thru the 2009 and 2010 years when I get the chance.

#70) District of Columbia v. Heller (decided June 25, 2008)
Justice Antonin Scalia authored the 5-4 opinion in favor of Dick Heller.

#69) Morgan Stanley v. Public Utility Dist. No. 1 of Snohomish County (decided June 25, 2008)
Justice Antonin Scalia authored the 5-2 opinion in favor of the utility

#69) Morgan Stanley v. Public Utility Dist. No. 1 of Snohomish County (decided June 25, 2008)
Justice Antonin Scalia authored the 5-2 opinion in favor of the utility

#67) Plains Commerce Bank v. Long Family Land & Cattle (decided June 25, 2008)
Chief Justice John Roberts penned the 5-4 opinion in favor of Plains Commerce Bank.

#66) Kennedy v. Louisiana (decided June 25, 2008)
Justice Anthony Kennedy authored the 5-4 opinion in favor of Patrick Kennedy.

Unanimity - This is past getting your ass kicked

Liberal Court Supremely Rejected in 5 Straight Cases

The Supreme Court may be sending a message to one of the country's most liberal appeals courts, (the Ninth Circuit) unanimously overturning five consecutive cases out of the 9th Circuit in less than a week - the key words are "unanimously" "five" and "in one week."

Unanimous decisions are so rare - The fact that the rulings were unanimous can be seen as a signal from on high that the circuit needs to get in line.

Duh. Unanimous. That is RARE these days and any lawyer will tell you that. ANY lawyer.
